I listen to it. I play it for friends. I use it in my TV show. It helps me write. And sometimes

I just dance around the bathroom to a hot jam or two. I've always been obsessed with music by women.

Whether it was my trip to the first Lilith Fair in fifth grade, whether it was my passion for

Tracy Chapman and the jukebox musical I wrote using her tunes in college as yet unproduced,

or whether it's my commitment to sharing the work of interesting female artists on the soundtrack

to girls, music, particularly music by women, is a hugely important part of my life. But like so many

industries, the music industry is still an ashamedly male and it really challenges its female

artists to maintain and hold on to their perspective. The music industry so often commodifies women,

co-ops their voices, and it's really exciting when you see an artist who's been able to break through
