We meet writer Oisín McKenna to discuss his debut novel Evenings and Weekends which is released today!

Oisín makes work about love, money, health and history. He’s interested in the ways that political, economic and social conditions shape how we act, think, and feel at particular places and times. He writes about the mundane details of people’s daily lives in order to tell a bigger story about the world.

Oisín McKenna was born in Dublin and lives in London. He was awarded the Next Generation Bursary from the Arts Council of Ireland to write Evenings and Weekends and it was developed with further funding from Arts Council England. Evenings and Weekends has been awarded a 2022 London Writers Award and in 2017, Oisín was named in the Irish Times as one of the best-spoken word artists in the country. He has written and performed four theatre shows, including ADMIN, an award-winning production at Dublin Fringe 2019, and has written for outlets including the Irish Times on issues such as gentrification and the alienation of Dublin’s youth.

0:40.7	observer because every time I have met today's guest, that's something that struck me about him.
0:46.5	I feel like he absorbs everything that's going on around him in a really kind of contemplative way and I also feel like he is on
0:56.7	the precipice of something very exciting because his debut book is about to be released.
1:02.1	It's called Evenings and Weekends and Both of us have read it and both of us I think cry didn't you cry when you read it?
1:09.1	I cried. Yeah and actually I think it's a common thing that's happening with most people that have read the preview copies of this book.
1:16.0	I've even seen quotes actually saying that people are crying when they read it.
1:20.0	But we were sent two different preview copies quite early on actually last year.
1:25.0	And yeah, it's been a real pleasure to kind of sit with this book and really think about it.
1:31.0	And another thing I feel is truthful because I feel like the way that he writes is so
1:36.4	sort of truthful and accurate and it's all kind of different issues which come together in this book, whether it be political, kind of everyday
1:46.7	mundanity, kind of social conditions, economic conditions that affect people's lives in a really real way.
1:55.0	And I also think it's a really beautiful dedication to living in a city and a metropolis
2:01.0	and also just about our relationships with each other and I think people really
2:06.2	need to buy this book it's out in early May and I think at the core as well of what our
2:12.1	guest does in his writing it comes from a really artistic place and I know the book was even supported by the Arts Council
2:18.0	I think the original grant or something that he got was even from the Arts Council So it's interesting to think about him as a writer who's really an artist,
2:26.3	but is using words to make art.
