The Christian faith has a long history in Egypt.

Around the year 1 BC, Joseph and Mary took the baby Jesus to Egypt to keep him from being

killed by Herod the Great.

Christianity came back to Egypt after Jesus' ministry.

And St. Mark, the author of the gospel, is credited with being its first patriarch.

But in 1968, something strange began happening in Zaytun, a suburb of Cairo.

Witnesses reported the Virgin Mary was appearing at a local church.

She appeared more than 90 times.

The apparitions involved dramatic displays of light, and these were even photographed. It's estimated more than a million people saw the apparitions,

making them the most witnessed Mirian apparitions in world history.
