Hello, I'm Nicholas Pinnock. For the last year and a half, Sky News and the Independent have been investigating complaints of sexual abuse on mental health wards across England.

And after months spent interviewing witnesses, trawling medical reports and filing freedom of information requests,

we've identified 20,000 complaints recorded across more than 30 trusts since 2019.

We've also been told about more than 800 allegations of sexual assault and rape involving female

patients, the majority of which have not been reported to the police.

The number of complaints have been rising each year, and at the same time, NHS England

mental health trusts have largely failed to provide evidence.

They're applying government-backed sexual safeguarding protections.

All this began with one woman, whose dramatic escape from psychiatric care sparked our investigation.
