Saturday became literally mere inches away from a stress test for our

Republic literally a stress test for this great experiment in self-governance.

Former president, who is the nominee for a second term,

was by all appearances shot at a political rally.

I'm on a group text with and have been for many years with three

of my closest friends, one of whom still serves in government. The other two served

at the highest levels in their respective areas of expertise and our

consensus this evening was a simple one, inches and a split second. The distance between the ear and the eye is the

minimus. The eye is the gateway to the brain. Had that shot been inches in another direction, we might well be talking

about a political assassination in a country already seemingly mired in division and anger.

And can you imagine the response?

And it's not isolated.

Gabby Giffords was nearly killed doing what members of Congress are supposed to do, which is meet with constituents.

And people who worked for her and came to see her were killed.

Stevie Scalise was very nearly killed practicing for a charity baseball game.

He suffered horrible injuries which will impact his life forever.
