Summary

Offshore wind’s potential in the United States — both as a renewable resource and as a job creation tool — is enormous. But the sector’s current reality is tiny. There are just seven wind turbines operating off the coast of the US. The few attempts to build large scale wind farms on par with those in Europe have run into long delays. And yet, now, after decades of political gridlock, the U.S. is picking up speed on plans to install thousands of wind turbines off the Atlantic coast. The story of this exciting turning point is being told by our friends at the podcast Outside/In from New Hampshire Public Radio. We’re sharing the first episode of their series, Windfall, which looks at the early stages of what it's like to build a massive new green energy industry. Welcome to How To Save a Planet, I'm Alex Bloomberg, and this is the show where we talk

0:06.3

about what we need to do to address climate change and how to make those things happen.

0:24.0

So we have talked a lot on the program about the potential for offshore wind.

0:27.9

In fact, the first ever How To Save a Planet episode was about a community in Massachusetts

0:33.5

that had shut down this big coal plant that was sort of at the center of its economy and

0:38.0

was trying to rebuild its economy around offshore wind.

0:42.8

But as we talked about in that episode, there's a lot of weird red tape barriers to getting

0:50.5

offshore wind up and running.

0:52.3

Even though the potential for offshore wind is pretty huge, I remember somebody in that

0:57.4

episode talking about like there is enough potential offshore wind energy to power essentially

1:03.0

the entire eastern seaboard.

1:06.0

But the reality is almost none of that potential is being harnessed right now.

1:12.6

The amount of offshore wind online in the United States is tiny.

1:15.9

There are just seven wind turbines operating off of Rhode Island and Virginia.

1:20.7

And the few attempts to build large scale wind farms like they have in Europe have run

1:25.3

into these long, massive red tape delays.

1:30.1

But after decades of political gridlock, the US is moving full speed ahead on plans to

1:34.1

install thousands of wind turbines off the Atlantic coast.

1:38.3

Wind energy is a big part of the Biden administration's plans to move the United States faster along

1:43.9

the transition to a carbon neutral future.

1:48.1

So we are at this turning point, this moment where wind energy is about to take off.

1:55.4

And there is a podcast that is documenting this very exciting moment.
