Summary

My guest this week is guide David Mangum, renowned tarpon guide, filmmaker, still photographer, fly tier—and well the guy is just incredibly talented. In the interview he gives us some fascinating tips on presenting a fly to tarpon, and you may be surprised at what this seasoned guide recommends. He also gives tips on presenting the fly to other species—no surprise that accuracy, not distance or power, is the most important factor. And prior to the interview, in the podcast we answer questions on why you don’t need to change leaders every time you hit a different water type, handicapping fly anglers, sunken hoppers, fishing a new landlocked salmon fishery, nymphing for bass, playing fish on Euro-style nymphing rod, setting the hook on the wet fly swing, diversity in fly fishing, stinky hackle, and attaching backing to fly line.

accuracy in casting to TARP and you may be surprised A, at how short a cast he prefers for TARP and B, how slowly he retrieves the fly.

So, you know, most of us envision Tarpin fishing as making a long a 70 foot cast and

stripping like crazy to get those fish to eat but I think you'll find that

Dave has quite a different philosophy on tarp and fishing as do a lot of modern

1:15.2

tarp and fishing guides. So that's going to be fun and don't worry if you don't plan on fishing for tarp and a lot of the advice that Dave gives will are appropriate for

But first let's start with the flybox and some weekly questions. The first one is

from Jim from Syracuse, New York. Thank you for the podcast. I learned something new every time I listen. I have a question about Atlantic salmon.

1:46.2

I've recently learned there's a group up here in New York trying to re-establish the Atlantic salmon in a somewhat nearby river Fish Creek.

1:56.0

Do these fish spend any amount of time in the river or do they just run in the fall to spawn?

2:01.0

The river flows into a reservoir and then a lake further down.

2:06.4

Would they hold there in there until fall?

2:10.3

Next question. What are some good flies to swing for Atlantic? I would love to catch one of these beautiful fish so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks again, Tom.

All right, so Jim, first of all,

2:24.0

Atlantic are different in every watershed

that you put them in there.
