Summary

In 2014, Californians passed Prop 47, a criminal justice reform measure aimed at sending fewer low-level offenders for drug and theft crimes to prison. Now, Californians are being asked if they want to roll back some of those reforms, and increase the penalties. KQED Politics Correspondent and co-host of Political Breakdown Marisa Lagos takes us through the history, data and arguments of this prop. This is the final episode in our 10-part Prop Fest series, examining the propositions on California's 2024 ballot. We'll be back to regular programming next week. From KQED. So recently I was in one of those big box stores in search of a very

humble can of shaving cream and I made my way to the pharmacy section, find the right

aisle, but then I get to the shelf and my shaving cream is locked behind plexiglass.

0:52.8

In there before, but with toothpaste and tums.

0:56.2

Right.

0:57.2

I mean, we're talking about a can of shaving cream that costs $2.19.

And yet there I was was ringing a bell, having someone unlock this little

cabinet for me, and just annoyed that this is the state of affairs that I live in.

Also, I don't know if it's just a me thing but I get super self-conscious about

1:14.3

inconveniencing the employees for some toothpaste but I digress.

1:19.4

Mm same. The proliferation of these plexiglass cases for shaving cream and toothpaste at

1:25.3

tums is just one example of how rising concerns about crime and theft are

changing how we live. But proponents of Prop 36 want to take these measures even further,

1:36.9

way beyond some plexiglass case at the local target.
