Hello there, I'm James Fletcher. The idea for this week's assignment first came to me when I read a report from Human Rights Watch.

It was about the situation in Malaysia and how the government is cracking down on free speech and dissent there.

Now big reports from human rights organizations are a dime a dozen, but what made this one really

interesting was looking into it, the characters involved and particularly the person you're going to hear from first in the program just seemed like a really interesting character and the fact that what he was doing seems in some ways innocuous he's just drawing cartoons and yet he was

getting this strong response and push back from the government so here's my program this

week. Hi, I'm James Fletcher, and for assignment this week I'm in Malaysia.

It's dawn on the streets of the capital Kuala Lumpur, a backstreet in Chinatown to be precise,

just around the corner from the central bus station.

Soon this place will be crawling with commuters, but for now it's just the birds, the occasional

bus and two men in black.

There's a car park over there and someone's in the car.

I'm trying to view what's in the car. They look around to make sure they're not being watched.

But I think it's safe.

That's not.

So there's a sense of hurry and hustle now they're working fast.

They've now covered quite a large area of the wall,

probably three meters by two meters in paste and glue.

One of the men cuts a distinctive figure wearing thick-rimmed glasses with long dark hair

spilling out the sides of his black beret.

His name is Fermi Raiser. He's one of Malaysia's best known artists. He starts to

unwrap a giant poster. It unfurled the bottom part of the poster. It's huge,
