Summary

What does real support look like when making a change? Stacey had her first drink at age 14, but by 15 or 16, life felt harder. She often clashed with her strict mom, leading her to rebel. In college, she bonded with friends over binge drinking, and at first, it felt normal. But over time, blackouts, anxiety, and injuries became more frequent. Her husband pointed it out, but his judgment only pushed her to drink more. When she finally decided to change for herself, she explored different approaches until she found This Naked Mind. In this episode, Stacey joins Annie to share how she built confidence in social settings without feeling like she was missing out, and why true change happens when you choose it for yourself. In this episode, Annie and Stacey will discuss: - Growing up with strict rules and moments of rebellion - Using alcohol to connect and feel more confident - Noticing patterns of binge drinking in social settings - Taking on parenting responsibilities at a young age - Balancing work, family, and drinking habits - Questioning her habits after blackouts and injuries - Facing judgment and pressure from her husband - Quietly choosing change on her own terms - Discovering This Naked Mind and rethinking her habits - Overcoming the pressure to drink socially - Replacing self-judgment with curiosity and awareness - Finding healthier ways to manage anxiety - Looking ahead with confidence and peace - And other topics… Related Episodes: EP 180: Reader Question – How Do You Deal with Family Members Who Still Drink? https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-180-how-do-you-deal-with-family-members-who-still-drink/  EP 669: Naked Life Story – Megan W. https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-669-naked-life-story-megan-w/  EP 735: Find the Courage to Choose Yourself: Patrick’s Naked Life https://thisnakedmind.com/find-the-courage-to-choose-yourself-patricks-naked-life-e735/  Ready to take the next step on your journey?  Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. How are you? Good. How are you, Annie?

0:23.0

I'm really good. I'm so glad that you're here today to share your story. Why don't you take us back to the beginning in your journey with alcohol? Where did it all start for you?

0:33.3

I really want to just preface my journey by saying that I really had a very loving, happy childhood.

0:40.4

My family and friends are all wonderful people.

0:43.7

And the struggles I'm going to discuss don't really have any reflection on them.

0:47.8

I feel the need to say that because this is really the first time that I'm speaking openly about my alcohol-free journey

0:57.3

and where it's led me to.

0:59.5

And it's just a scary thing sometimes when it's the first time that you're discussing.

1:05.2

There might be a lot of people who hear this that don't have a clue.

1:09.2

So I just like to preface with that. So basically, alcohol has

1:14.3

always been present in my life, families, gathering social circles, anything that we did,

1:23.3

alcohol was present. It wasn't something that I ever even thought about. It was just there.

1:29.2

I did not always know that that wasn't necessarily normal for people. My family is a very

1:36.9

hardworking group of people and it's that motto, work hard, play hard type of motto. So my first drink was at the age of 14, and it wasn't

1:48.9

really that significant. My mother had a confirmation party for me, and to her, that was a big deal.

1:55.8

So we had a huge party with all family and friends. And I don't even remember who gave me the drink, but it was

2:02.8

kind of like a rite of passage. And, you know, after that, it was never a second thought. But what I can

2:09.2

say is that at the age of about 15 or 16, I went through a very hard time. My mother and I

2:17.2

had a rough relationship.

2:18.6

She was very protective, very strict, and I basically rebelled against everything that she
