Summary

In today's episode, Venus Kagabo joins Abby to talk about her experience as a woman of color in Canada. Venus expands on global racism, the importance of all races being allies, how to educate yourself and others and have conversations with those who are close-minded, tokenism, the danger of the media, voting, and so much more. If you would like to watch this conversation rather than listen, you can watch it on Abby's youtube channel, where she will also be donating all ad revenue generated from the video to a BLM organization that fights for racial equality and justice. You can stream it in the background just as a way to donate without using your own money if you are looking for ways to donate! BLACK LIVES MATTER.

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Gen Zy Girl podcast. My name is Abby Asselin and I did not upload last week.

0:08.7

With everything going on, I'm sure you guys know with the unjust death of George Floyd and all of the protests against racial injustice going on, it just didn't feel right to upload a podcast that was completely

0:24.0

unrelated to everything going on last week. It's been a very heavy week for me and a lot of people.

0:30.0

And I say that coming from privilege, I mean, I am a white female. I am privileged. I've grown up

0:35.6

in a bubble. And I can't even begin to understand

0:38.9

or comprehend everything that people of color are going through right now. But I am very hopeful

0:45.1

that this is the start of change for us as a country and hopefully globally as well. So did not upload last week I haven't been

0:57.3

posting anything on any of my social media besides resources and things like

1:03.0

that to help educate people and help encourage people to take action just out of

1:07.9

solidarity for this whole movement and it really is is a movement. It's not a trend.

1:14.5

It's not a political thing. This is a human rights issue at the end of the day. And I just wanted to

1:22.7

have this podcast episode because I know that it's very important for me as an influencer to do my job

1:29.4

as an influencer and be a good influence about things other than, you know, clothes and fashion

1:36.2

and college and things like that. Like at the end of the day, my job is to influence and

1:41.4

at the core of that is to influence on things that actually matter that are going

1:45.7

to educate other people, inform other people, and help us all work towards a lasting change for good.

1:53.8

And that's why I wanted to record this podcast episode. And I did my first Zoom recording podcast ever

2:00.8

and it went really well. I'm recording this right

2:03.7

after I recorded with the guest of today's episode and her name is Venus Kagabo. I might have

2:09.0

just butchered her last name even though we went through out of her mountain mountain

2:11.7

multiple times. She is from Canada and you will hear in this episode a lot about her experience growing up she provides

2:18.9

a lot of helpful information on being an ally getting educated um having lasting change
