Summary

A new apologetic technique has arisen in recent years of trying to prove the Book of Mormon true by proving all naturalistic theories false. RFM analyzes this methodology and shows it to be fundamentally flawed in a number of ways. Brian Hales, the current proponent of this apologetic, isn’t going to like this episode!

and the process of elimination. Tonight I want to talk about a Mormon apologetic theory that has

0:43.6

risen as of late, the purpose of which is to prove that the Book of Mormon really is divine,

0:49.1

really is inspired, really is from God and really was produced through angelic administration

0:55.2

and translation through the gift and power of God. The apologists have been trying to prove

1:00.6

that true for a long time, but unfortunately as more and more information is discovered about

1:06.8

ancient history both in the Old World and in the New, the quest to prove the Book of Mormon true

1:12.8

by rational argument and evidence continues to recede beyond the apologists' grasp

1:19.3

like chasing the end of the rainbow. Because of that, around 20 years ago or so,

1:24.4

the apologists came up with a new idea, and that idea was not to prove the Book of Mormon true,

1:30.0

but to prove that all the naturalistic explanations for the coming forth of the Book of Mormon

1:35.8

are not true, with the idea in mind that once you have eliminated the competition,

This is where he is describing to Watson his process of elimination. When you have eliminated the

1:59.5

impossible, says Sherlock Holmes, when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains,

2:05.0

however improbable, must be the truth. Now, that is a wonderful statement. It is axiomatic

2:13.2

that that is correct. Indeed, once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains,

2:18.2

however improbable, must be the truth. And this is the attack the apologists are taking,

2:23.7

or at least trying to take with this particular argument. I first heard this kind of argument

2:29.0

around 20 years ago, I believe it was, from Daniel C. Peterson. I don't know if he originated
