Summary

Today, you’ll learn about a new polymer that could battle antibiotic resistant infections, a possible new way to detect life on other planets from afar, and what to expect when you’re expecting to adopt a furry friend.

Without further ado, let's satisfy some curiosity. By some estimates, there are nearly

0:49.4

three million infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria every single year. And that's just in the

0:56.0

United States. This is a rapidly intensifying global threat. We actually do a lot of stories

1:01.3

on antibiotic resistance because it's such a huge problem. It is a massive problem.

1:07.1

Antibiotics were considered a sort of miracle breakthrough when they developed around 100 years ago,

1:11.6

and what followed was a golden age of fighting infections. But, I mean, as we all know, the infections

1:17.5

fought back. The bacteria that causes infections adapts ways to resist the effects of the antibiotics.

1:23.0

So the more infections that occur, the more antibiotics are prescribed, and the more chances

1:27.4

the bacteria

1:28.0

has to adapt. It's sort of this vicious cycle that is causing untold pain and even death.
