In the noon episode of Five Things, we told you about President Donald Trump's shift in tone

toward Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and China.

Well, that came a day after he met privately in the Oval Office with chief executives of four

major U.S. retail companies.

Administration officials say the CEOs of Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and Lowe's were invited

to the White House to warn Trump about the real-world impact of his trade policies.

Two people familiar with the meeting say the business leaders warned that store shelves across America could, quote,

soon be empty.

Officials say Doug McMillan, the head of Walmart,

bluntly told Trump the trade war with China had already started to disrupt the supply chain and would

only intensify by summer. I truly love the job of being United States Senator, but in my heart,

I know it's time to pass the torch. The longtime second-ranking Democrat in the Senate says he plans to retire at the end of next year.
