What makes a marriage last?

It was a bitter cold November morning when we got to the airport.

We were heading out to Chicago on my old stomping grounds to visit Reverend Jesse Jackson and Jacqueline Jackson.

Not only are these two civil rights icons, his work with Dr. Martin Luther King, her lifelong activism,

but they've been married throughout it all nearly 60 years.

I was really looking forward to it.

Only problem, our flight from New York was severely delayed, and we were five hours late for our date.

It was awful. I really hate being late for anything.

But even though it was already evening by the time we landed, they said, come on over anyway.

I've known them for decades, and that's the kind of generous people they are.

How are the children?

Well, they all still talk to me.

That's a good sign.

Jesse was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease several years ago.
