I'm Mark Stephen.

This week I've been visiting my idea of heaven, a sawmill with a group of furniture makers and designers.

Now, this story is almost literally an example of a phoenix rising from the ashes.

You may be aware that ash trees in Scotland and throughout Europe are being decimated by a fungal disease called dieback.

As a result of that, trees across the country are having to be

felled and there's a conservation effort underway to try and save the species. Ashrise is a project

involving furniture makers, foresters and sawmillers to transform feld ash into beautifully crafted

furniture and other objects. Now in 2022, I want to see some of the trees being cut down.

And then recently, I was invited along to the Scottish wood sawmill near Dunfermline

to meet some of the makers choosing wood for their projects.
