Summary

Laurie Shaver is accused of fatally shooting her husband Michael Shaver in November 2015, burying him in the backyard under a fire pit, and then impersonating him in texts and Facebook messages to make people think he was still alive. Laurie was arrested in 2020, and the long-awaited trial is finally here. Laurie's defense has implicated her daughter, who had just turned seven, and her former married lover, but the state says it was Laurie who is responsible.

Hello, 13th jurors. This week, the plan was to do the final installment of the three-part Black Swan series,

0:06.8

but we're going to have to go a little bit out of order because of some case updates.

0:11.0

I'll have that episode out for you next week. This week, we're going to do part one of the case against Lorry Shaver in Claremont, Florida.

0:19.7

I first heard about this case when one of my

0:21.7

longtime best friends since college told me about it. Her kids went to school with Laurie and Mike's

0:27.3

kids, and she and her husband became friendly with Laurie and her new husband, Travis. They spent

0:33.6

some time together and even went over there and roasted marshmallows and drank beer around their new fire pit. She told me about Laurie's previous husband and said that he was either

0:42.9

missing or had left, but she said that the details were kind of weird and flaky. Fast forward a little

0:49.4

bit and she was calling me to tell me that word got around town that Mike was found buried under the fire pit in the backyard,

0:56.1

the same fire pit that my friend had sat around with them. It took another year and a half before

1:01.3

Lorry was finally arrested and accused of fatally shooting her husband, Michael Schaver, and then burying him in their backyard,

1:08.9

building a fire pit over his body, and using his

1:11.5

phone and social media to trick his friends and family into thinking that he was still alive.

1:17.0

This case has a lot of twist and turns.

1:19.8

Laurie had a wandering eye and a bad temper, and at the time of Mike's disappearance, she

1:24.7

was seeing a married man named Jeremy, or Jay, as he was often called.

1:29.4

Laurie has implicated him, as well as her daughter, who had just turned seven at the time.

1:34.2

This case has kept my attention for years, even before I started the podcast, and I was in Lake

1:39.4

County Courthouse all week for the trial. I've been able to talk to some of the friends and

1:43.4

family of Mike

1:44.2

and Laurie and Travis getting an inside look at the story that hasn't been told.
