Summary

Cory O'Daniel has had an interesting path to technology, growing his career in a number of cloud architect roles at Ripple, DealScience and The RealReal. He has rich experience in DevOps, the cloud and platform engineering. But outside of tech, he is married with 2 kids, living in Southern California. He loves driving (and destroying) RC cars - like the ones that go 65-70 miles per hour. He jumps them off a lot of ramps, his highest jump behind 20 feet upwards... which of course, he landed. Cory noticed that there is a huge knowledge gap regarding the cloud, especially during his time doing professional services. He would leave a project post completion, and see a major gap in how the client understood what was built. He and his co-founders had the idea to build a product to allow platform engineers to diagram their infra - and fuel developers engineering process. This is the creation story of Massdriver. Engineers aren't the buyer, right?

0:28.7

They don't control the keys to the cloud kingdom.

This thing can be great for them, but it's going to attach to your cloud.

And as soon as that happens, it's an operational concern.

And so as we're talking to

0:38.2

these companies, the ops teams all of a sudden are like, wait a second, can we put our own modules in

0:43.6

this? And we're like, no, it's not like that. Like, you guys don't need to do this anymore. It would be

0:48.4

really cool if we could put our own in this. And then our engineers could just diagram like our

infrastructure.

0:54.9

So we're like, nah, that's a crazy idea.

0:57.5

And then after about 15 people told us this in a row, we're like, oh, maybe we should

1:01.4

just let people upload their own modules to it and then let their engineers diagram.

1:05.3

That was our like unlocking moment.
