In this edition, I'm off up a mountain with a mission.

Increasingly, the health of our soil is being recognised as intrinsic to human survival.

On the whole, we know very little about what organisms exist within the earth.

But we do know that significantly more carbon is stored within the soil than the

vegetation above it. Scientists at the James Hutton Institute have established a clever way of engaging

willing Monroe baggers to help them in their research, all with the aim of finding out what

lives underneath our feet.

Andrea Britton is a soil ecologist at the Institute and leads the Mountain Heights Hidden Depths

project. She invited me to collect some soil samples on a mountain I've long wished to wonder on.
