There was a time when people said that the sun never set on the British Empire.

Strictly speaking, it didn't. It was huge.

It covered over a quarter of the Earth's land surface and included some 450 million people.

Now, I think it's fair to say that most folk look back nowadays at the British Empire with mixed feelings.

It had an enormous, not always good,

impact on cultures, political systems, economies and inevitably ecosystems. There's an exhibition on

at the moment at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh called Shipping Roots, Roots spelt with a

double low, which uses trees, plants and seeds to look back at some

fascinating aspects of our imperial past. The artist behind it is Keg de Sousa. Now Keg's family

came from Goa in southern India, but she lives now in Australia, and it's no coincidence

that both those countries were part of the British Empire.

So I'm a person of Goan descent and I live as a settler on unseated Gatigal land in the city known colonally as Sydney.
