An American publishing giant is expanding its international reach.

Last week, New York-based Simon & Schuster announced it was acquiring Dutch publishing house Vien, Bosch, and Keening, or VBK. The deal is still subject

to review. Financial terms haven't been disclosed, but should it go through, it'd be notable for a few

reasons. It's the first move in Simon and Schuster's recent quest for

international expansion, and it would mark the first non-English language acquisition for the

publisher, too. The almost century-old VBK is the largest Dutch publishing house, turning out

1,500 titles annually with 280 employees. For comparison's sake, Simon and Schistair publishes

1,300 new titles each year and has about 1,700 employees. The Dutch are certainly efficient,

are they not? As part of the deal, Simon and Schistair will acquire VBK's publishers in both
