On September 2nd, 2003, a Bellevue dispatcher got a call they had never heard before.

The caller said that their neighbor's daughter came flying out of the house because an intruder had come in and shot her parents.

She didn't see the whole gruesome scene, but she heard what had happened, she heard the gunshots, her parents were not answering. And she ran out of the house to try to find some safety.

This is shocking because there had not been a murder in Bellevue in over 10 years. It was a pretty quiet town. There's only about 2,000 people that lived there. So suspect pool is looking pretty small.

But I don't think that the investigators expected just how grim this crime scene was.

When they got to the house, they found Alan and Diane deceased from gunshot wounds.

This gun was actually a hunting rifle.

Diane was under the covers because she was sleeping.

But Bob Pangburn, who was an

attorney on the case, later said that because this was a close range shot and the gases from

the bullet followed into her skull that her skull had essentially spherically exploded while

she was sleeping. To go from such a state of peace, the deepest state of peace,

sleep to the most graphic thing I've ever heard of in a case is just absolutely astounding to me.

After Diane, the killer then went into the bathroom where the shower was running.

This is where Alan Johnson must have heard what

happened to his wife, and he was just stepping out of the shower where he was then shot in the

chest at close range. There were also knives placed at the end of the bed, which led investigators

to believe that whoever came to the house that night came there to kill the family.

I know every true crime case starts like this, but it is true.

It is so true.

Alan and Diane Johnson were well-known and well-loved members of the community.
