And today we go back to a dangerous moment in the Cold War, when in 1983 the Soviet Union's

missile defense system falsely warned that the United States had just launched ballistic

missiles towards Russia.

This is the story of one man who helped avert a nuclear war. It was an ordinary day. I wasn't meant to be on duty. I wasn't meant to be on duty.

I was just standing in for a colleague.

On the 26th of September 1983,

Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov

began his shift as the duty officer in charge of Serbakov 15.

A Soviet military command center outside of Moscow which used satellites

to monitor ballistic missile bases in the United States.

I was an analyst, the deputy head of the Combat Algarithms department, but on that day I was the

operative on duty.

In charge of a team of 100 officers, plus 30 soldiers, the combat detail.
