Hello, my name is Father Gregory Pine and I am a Dominican friar of the province of St Joseph.

I teach at the Dominican House of Studies and I work for the Tomistic Institute and this is Pines of

the Quinas.

So a lot of folks will make distinctions between joy,

happiness, pleasure, beattitude, delight, and other things besides. And it can be

difficult to determine what each term means and how each of those

realities correspond to our human flourishing and ultimately our human salvation.

So I thought that I would set before you some of the terminology

and some of the concepts of St Thomas Aquinas

so that way we could make better sense of our pursuit of God

and our pursuit of happiness.

Here we go.

Okay, so for St Thomas, whenever we talk about some kind of realization or some kind of fulfillment,

we're talking about something that follows upon human love. Okay, so you recognize something, you love that something. You recognize something, you love that something, you go out towards that something, and then you possess that something.

And when you possess that something, it's going to cause some kind of enjoyment or some kind of fulfillment.

But the quality of the enjoyment or the fulfillment will be proportionate to the type of love on which it follows.

Okay, so if you're like, somewhat abstract, clear it up for me.

We as human beings are body's soul composites.

That is to say that we are made up of both body and soul. We're not like a

body with a soul or a soul with a body or an in sold bodies or embodied souls.
