January 6th, 2021 is a day that will live in infamy.

It is the day that the American tradition of the peaceful transition of power ended.

It was commenced on March 4, 1797, when John Adams took the oath of office, the 35 words prescribed in the Constitution, and succeeded George Washington, as commander-in-chief, as head of state, as the second president of the United States of America.

There are 45 men who have held that office through President Biden.

Each of them was different. Some of them were among the greatest leaders this country has ever produced. The others? Not so much. But none of them, none of them, did what Donald Trump tried to do. None of them attacked the American way of life.

And the American way of life is foundationally built on an idea that the people in this country pick the leaders.

We decide.

We are sovereign.

Together, the American people, constitute government of the people, by the people, for the people.

It is one of the most audacious experiments in American history.

What Donald Trump did is more than a betrayal. It's more than felony crimes, like those that have been charged and levied against him. What Donald Trump did is commit

the singularly greatest breach of trust, the greatest betrayal in the history of the United States.

It was the phone I handed to John McCain with Barack Obama on the other

line. It's the phone that John McCain used to congratulate Barack Obama, his political opponent.

It's the phone that John McCain used to address Senator Obama as Mr. President-elect for the first time.

It was John McCain addressing Barack Obama as Mr. President-elect that mattered.

It always has.
