Summary

This episode we're joined by Stone Glacier founder and lead product designer Kurt Racicot, who's a passionate backcountry hunter. A past Alaska resident for a dozen years, Kurt hunted and shot several mountain goats and dall sheep on solo adventures, as well as moose and bear and caribou, before moving home to Montana and launching Stone Glacier.

Here, Kurt shares stories and lessons learned during his gnarliest hunts, and gives us an inside look at Stone Glacier, a company that's become synonymous with ultra-light, mountaineering-quality hunting packs, sleeping bags, tents, and apparel.

A fellow eccentric cartridge enthusiast, Kurt also tells us about his two go-to cartridges and the rifle setups he currently uses for backcountry sheep and goat hunting and for Montana elk.

We also talk through functional optics, glassing techniques, and how to cover country with boots and optics.

Folks there are a few types of hunters that I really respect and have learned to

0:06.7

appreciate through the years and decades of backcountry hunting and one of

0:11.1

them is that really driven solo guy who goes whether you can find a friend to go with him or not who is willing to undergo whatever hardship physical or mental as necessary to find and harvest exceptional animals.

And I've got such a man on the phone today.

0:30.0

This is Kurt with Stone Glacier.

0:33.3

He, as I understand it, was the originator of the brand and is currently the lead designer.

0:40.1

Kurt, welcome to the show, my friend.

0:41.8

All right, thank you for having me.

0:45.0

Oh, it's a pleasure.

0:46.0

So for our listeners that aren't real familiar with, well, the Stone Glacier

0:50.6

Brand, I think most people know about, but you and your backstory, do you mind just

0:55.1

kind of telling us your history a little bit?

0:58.1

Oh yeah, you bet. I was born and raised here in Montana and then went to college at Montana State and after I'd

1:07.1

finished up here I moved to Alaska. I got my degree in teaching.

1:12.6

So I had always wanted to experience Alaska,

1:15.8

everything that had.

1:17.1

And so I moved up there and I taught in Alaska for six years

1:22.4

and then moved in working into the power industry on the

1:26.4

north slope so I spent a total of 13 years in Alaska and then after I was married we were looking at starting a family so we want to be

1:37.1

back around our family and so we moved back to Montana and shortly after it started Stone Glacier and we've been here since.

1:47.8

So that's kind of the nuts and bolts of how we've arrived where we're at.

1:54.0

Well, outstanding.
