0:07.2	This is the story of two hills, really.
0:10.6	I grew up in rural, Matoon, Kansas.
0:14.0	My family's farmhouse was on top of one small hill, and across the way a little higher
0:19.6	were the rencos.
0:22.0	Between the properties was a long depression, where a creek had once been a hundred years
0:25.8	ago.
0:27.0	But it was dry and only about ten feet wide when I was a kid.
0:31.8	The rencos were considered bad seeds.
0:35.0	Their property was derelict, always about to be taken by the bank.
0:39.5	They survived.
0:41.0	Who knows how.
0:42.6	Buying and selling and trading things.
0:44.9	Government programs.
0:47.0	You never knew which relatives were living there.
0:50.2	I grew up looking at their house on the hill, only occasionally seeing someone up there.
0:56.6	Over the years they had more and more junk strewn around.
1:00.0	They didn't like for anyone to see them.
1:02.6	My family had no contact with them.
1:04.5	We didn't know anyone who really did.
1:08.8	One day in 1933, one of the elder rencos, I think his name was Peter, trudged up the hill
