Hatred can make a seemingly harmless person into something incredibly dangerous.

On April 17, 1999, the first of what would be three bombings took place in London that targeted members of minority groups,

bombings that were fueled by extreme hatred.

So if you like your coffee hot but your bones chilled, sit back and start your day with a

morning cup of murder. On Saturday, April 17, 1999, on Electric Avenue in Brixton, an area south of

London with a large black population, a bomb detonated inside the Brixton market.

An area teeming with traders, who, growing suspicious before the blast, noticed a man acting

oddly and moved the sports bag he left into an area that was less crowded.

Moved twice more by unconvinced traders and even removing the makeshift explosive

from the bag itself, it was eventually left next to the Iceland supermarket while the traders

called the police. They arrived at 5.25 p.m. just as the explosive finally went off. Made using explosives from fireworks, a total of 48 people

were injured when four-inch nails were blasted across the area and sent into all directions.

Windows were blown out, parked cars blasted, and as the smoke cleared and the injured were assessed,

many feared that the attack was made by someone targeting the city's non-white communities.

Later, several racist groups took those fears and added fuel to the fire

by claiming responsibility for the bombing.
