I'm not big on birthdays. This is probably because my birthday happens to fall during a part of the year where fun isn't

only discouraged but avoided at all costs, January 2nd. Between the holiday hangover, the 5 pounds we all put on and everyone doing

sober January, well I think you can see how I got the raw end of the birthday deal here.

I don't want to complain too much about my birthday because that signal that I wish my birthday

was something I could enjoy more. Frankly, at this point, I'd prefer that no one confronts the fact

that I'm getting a year older. This year, and pretty much every year for the past 5 years, really,

I've said the same thing when asked for what I want from my birthday. I all I say is a steak dinner

in a large glass of red wine. It doesn't seem like a big ask, which is probably why my wife always

goes above and beyond that steak dinner in big glass of wine that I so crave. On January 1st this year,

the day before my birthday, I had my schedule all planned out. Cure any lingering hangover with the

short peloton ride, pick up a sandwich from somewhere in town, watch a soccer match, and settle in

for the rest of the day doing well pretty much nothing. But when I expressed this Sunday feeling

scheduled to my other half, she had other plans. I was told that I was going to need to pack an

overnight bag because we had somewhere to go. My mind was racing and for good reason. We surely

can't be flying anywhere. Where is she taking me? Are we staying at someone's house? Are we even

leaving town? Finally, I broke and I just asked, alright, what are we doing? Knowing that I probably

would have put up a stink until she told me, she broke. We're doing a staycation. If you're

unfamiliar with the term, you can probably figure it out. A staycation is essentially when you go on

vacation, but in your hometown or wherever you live. In the past, whether publicly or privately,

I've always somewhat kind of judged them. Why spend so much money to say somewhere where you
