This week we're looking at key moments from the Second World War in the Pacific, which ended 75 years ago when Japan

surrendered to Allied forces. The surrender came after US planes dropped two atomic bombs on Japanese cities. The first was dropped on

Hiroshima on the 6th of August 1945. The second exploded over the Japanese city of Nagasaki.

Louise Hidalgo has collected memories from that day from the BBC Archive.

It's the 9th of August 1945.

Three days earlier, the Americans had dropped the first atomic bomb

the world had ever seen on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Now, before dawn breaks over the

Pacific Ocean, three American B-29 bombers are taking off again.

On board is a British observer, group Captain Leonard Cheshire.

We took off at 2 o'clock in the morning. We were only notified we were going six hours before.

We took off with the news that there was a lines call between us and the target. So we had to fly to the target

individually. We never saw the other aircraft. When we got to the primary

target and it was partially under cloud and we received a message

they were abandoning that and going on to the secondary target which was Nagasaki.
