Hello, everyone. Welcome to Slash Film Daily. Today is Thursday, April 3, 2025. On today's episode of the show, I'm going to talk a little bit about one of my favorite movies of the year so far and present an interview with that film's writers and stars. My name is Ben Pearson. I'm an editor at slashfilm.com. It's just me on today's show. A handful of times a year, I'll see a movie that I fall head over heels for, and many times when that happens, it won't be something that was on our most anticipated films of the year list, but something smaller that comes out of nowhere.

0:29.3

And I'm thrilled to say that that has happened again with a new movie called The Ballad of Wallace Island.

0:34.2

It's playing in select theaters right now. It opens everywhere on April 18th. And I know

0:39.0

the impulse from some of you might be to immediately skip this episode because April 18th is still

0:43.5

a little ways off and you might not have access to see the movie yet. I try not to run interviews

0:48.0

with filmmakers until the movie we're talking about opens in wide release. But the folks who

0:52.2

set up this interview asked me if I could publish this conversation this week, presumably to get the film on people's radar as early as possible

0:58.0

so it doesn't fall through the cracks. And this is absolutely the type of movie that could

1:01.6

easily fall through the cracks because it's so small. Carrie Mulligan is the biggest star in

1:06.7

it to give you an idea of the scale that I'm talking about. But I'm hoping this episode convinces some of you to check out the movie because I truly

1:14.1

loved it.

1:14.7

It's charming.

1:15.8

It's heartwarming.

1:17.2

It's a feel-good movie.

1:18.3

I laughed.

1:18.9

I cried.

1:19.6

It is just fantastic.

1:21.1

So the Ballad of Wallace Island is directed by James Griffiths.

1:25.5

It's about this eccentric British guy named Charles, who

1:29.2

hires a past his prime singer-songwriter named Herb Maguire to come out to Charles's home

1:34.0

on a remote island to play a gig. And when he gets there, Herb is surprised to discover that Charles

1:39.8

has also invited Nell Mortimer, played by Carrie Mulligan, who Herb hasn't seen in years.
