Unfictional is a program of true stories, personal documentaries, and what I call radio movies, kind of a cinematic audio story. And this episode is a good example. It's a new piece from longtime unfictional contributor Eric Allen and listening to him is a kind of hypnotic trip that

weaves through history and memory and may not go where you're expected.

Eric Allen once spent 10 weeks alone in a depression era cabin that was scheduled to be demolished.

And something happened to him in there, but the only proof is in the pages of a small blue spiral bound

notebook.

I, uh... I don't know why I'm telling you this it's the story of one of my biggest adult mistakes, if not the biggest mistake.

And it was supposed to solve everything.

I was 21, a sophomore in college, and I was failing.

And this was a college without grades, by the way.

Preskett College was a granola, hippie-dippyippy choose your own adventure type of liberal art school.

It still is I bet.

But after obsessively filling up spiral-bound notebooks with my poetry for a few years, I chose

Preskett College to be a writer.

They had no writing department to speak of, but Preskitt is where my grandparents lived.

And by the end of my first year, I was really struggling, but the only advice my counselor

gave me was that college wasn't for everybody.

Which might have been true, but I needed some help.

I was still mad about that.
