Sheryl “Mac” McCollum is an Emmy Award winning CSI, a writer for CrimeOnLine, Forensic and Crime Scene Expert for Crime Stories with Nancy Grace, and a CSI for a metro Atlanta Police Department. She is the co-author of the textbook., Cold Case: Pathways to Justice. Sheryl is also the founder and director of the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute, a collaboration between universities and colleges that brings researchers, practitioners, students and the criminal justice community together to advance techniques in solving cold cases and assist families and law enforcement with solvability factors for unsolved homicides, missing persons, and kidnapping cases.

At about nine years old, I wanted to be a jewel thief, an international jewel thief.

I wanted to go to Monaco in the south of France and hit these beautiful homes and acquire some of these

priceless diamonds and sapphires. So here's the deal. I'm watching a movie and this movie

gripped me. It was the mystery of Mr. X. And in that movie they talk about a second story man. And I'm like a second

story man. So they enter on the second floor through a window so that you're not caught going

in and out of the front door. You're not even going to be seen. So I started practicing going

through our kitchen window. And then I moved on to the back of the

house because I thought if I try to go through my bedroom window on the front of the house,

you know, we had a lot of neighbors in the 70s that would come over and stop you or call your

mama. So I got the ladder and I propped it on the house and I'm going to go through that second

floor window. Well, I learned pretty quickly

a couple of things. One, the ground in the backyard was a little bit uneven and I didn't like

not having a floor under me. So I decided I'm going to be pretty adept at disguises because I'm

going to have to go through the front door so that when I go to these lavish parties, because that was my idea, that's when I would hit these houses during these parties they wouldn't know.

Or if they were taking a month-long vacation to Monaco or somewhere or the south of France, that's when I would burglarize the home.

I had a lot of ideas about the type of criminal that I would be.
