A big theme in Old Testament prophecy is the day of the Lord.

And if you look back at Joel or Amos or Zachariah or Ezekiel or especially Isaiah,

and you hear these Old Testament prophets by inspiration of the Holy Spirit,

describing the day of the Lord is a day of darkness and judgment and God meeting out recompense against his enemies. How is that

day of the Lord fulfilled at the cross on Good Friday? And how is it fulfilled every Lord's day?

Welcome back to Issues, Et cetera. I'm Todd Wilkin. Dr. Brian German joins us to talk about the Day of the Lord in Scripture.

He's Associate Professor of Theology and Director of the Concordia Bible Institute at Concordia University, Wisconsin.

He's author of a column for the April issue of the Lutheran Witness magazine titled, The Day of the Lord has come and is coming.

Why did God institute holy days for his Old Testament people?

Yeah, there are many of them, aren't there as you make your way through the Old Testament.

We have, of course, right in the beginning of the Bible,

there's some special days there. God, I suppose, could have created the whole thing in one day or

five days or 20, but we have seven. We have six days for creation. We have a seventh day rest.

And we have special days from there on out already in that in the creation

narrative you can see that the seventh day would be a holy day that's the day god rested and

it's already in the first couple chapters of the bible you get get this indication that the Lord has holy days,

holy times. And why do we have these holy days? Well, just think again about that seventh day.
