broadcasting from AS-220 in Providence, Rhode Island. The insistence that

Black Lives Matter at first blush seems straightforward and minimal.

But the movement for Black Lives has transformed Black Politics and American

politics as a whole.

Black Lives Matter is a declaration that is radical in its simplicity,

highlighting the value of people that for the entirety of American history,

from slavery, convict leasing, and Jim Crow to the great migration,

housing and school segregation, and mass incarceration, have been enslaved, tortured, imprisoned, marginalized, and exploited.

Barack Obama's election was a symbolic but real victory for many black Americans.

But the Obama administration also exposed a huge gap between the hopes and promises he campaigned

on and lived realities that continued to be defined by poverty, police abuse, segregation, and incarceration.

It was amidst this tension and contradiction that the Movement for Black Lives

erupted to make radical demands on the American state and the American people for social and

economic justice and for an end to police violence and mass incarceration.

It was this very same contradiction between the promise of America and its lived reality

that in very different ways also paved the way for Trump's law and order backlash.
