Not one marred by tragedy and death. On June 23, 2000, a fire broke out

in a hostel and saw the deaths of 15 travelers. So if you like your coffee hot, but your bones

chilled, sit back and start your day with a morning cup of murder.

On June 23, 2000, the Childers Palace Backpackers Hostel caught fire in the town of

Childers, Queensland, Australia. Beginning shortly before 1230 a.m. in the downstairs

recreation room, the flames quickly spread up the walls and into the

stairwell. Survivors would later describe how the smoke quickly filled the area and the building's

power was lost, making escape incredibly difficult. With no alarms and no emergency lighting, the people who managed to wake in time to flee

tried their best to rouse and rescue as many others as possible. The first emergency call

came from a pay phone across the street at 1231 a.m. and help arrived just seven minutes later.

While they spent hours trying to extinguish the blaze,

out of the 88 people staying in the hostel that night,

73 managed to walk out.

Of that number, 10 suffered from minor burns and injuries from trying to escape the top floor

by jumping onto the roofs

of other buildings.
