The modern use of the phrase is attributed to Fred R. Barnard, who wrote this in the advertising trade journal

The December 8th, 1921 issue carried an ad in title, One Look look is worth a thousand words, and they spelled

labeled as a Chinese proverb because they didn't think anybody would take it seriously.
