Thank you for joining us for a Tuesday edition of our podcast.

We are joined today by someone I have a lot of respect

for. He's a subject matter of jurisdiction expert when it comes to foreign policy and

actual intelligence, defense, foreign policy. But it wouldn't be me if it weren't like a long

windup. I mean, I'm glad they have a pitch clock now in baseball, but I would violate it. So I'm going to

introduce him by saying this. Years ago, the attorney general called and said, I need you go to go to a

different part of the state and trial murder case. And the prosecutor in that jurisdiction had a

conflict in the AG's office, wasn't able to devote a trial team to that case. It was a death

penalty case. A lot of resources go into that. So I packed up and headed down the interstate

to try a death penalty case in another county. This defendant was charged with double murder.

And he was representing himself. Not a very smart thing to do, but people have a constitutional right to do dumb things, like represent themselves.

So morning after morning for weeks, literally for weeks, I had to meet with the judge and the man that I was prosecuting for his life.

I don't know the last time you sat down and had a

civil conversation with someone that you were trying to put on death row, but it's a different

kind of conversation. We had to talk about the order of witnesses and jury selection and the
