Remember, remember, the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason and plot.

It's funny isn't it, how, as with divorce beheaded died, divorce beheaded survived, there

are some parts of British history that have become so familiar to us that they're even

encapsulated in children's rhymes.

Because of that, I think it can be easy to fail to put them in their proper chronological

context or to understand quite how devastating and important they were all might have been.

The gunpowder plot is one of the hinge events of British history, an act of terror that stretches

back for its roots into the Tudor period and forward for its legacy to the Civil War,

the glorious revolution and well beyond.

Its a story of holy war, religious hatred, divided loyalties and the clash between security

and freedom.

It's never been more timely.

The guest who joins me today to talk about the gunpowder plot is Jesse Childs.

Jesse is an award-winning author, her book, God's Traders, Terror and Faith in Elizabeth

in England won the prestigious Penn Hessel Tiltman Prize for history.
