I'm from Vietnam.

I came here when I was a teenager.

I was 13.

I'm from Orange County, California.

It all really started when I was in high school in the early to mid-2000s.

We lived in an apartment for low-income folks and really the first time I was eating the high-day experience

was one afternoon after I got home from school. Usually my parents would be at work.

My siblings, they would be at school, so I would be home by myself for a couple hours.

In this apartment, once you walk in, you hit the living room first.

And then on your left side, you'll see the kitchen window.

And on the right side is a hallway to the bedroom.

I came home and I heard water running in the kitchen and I heard the opening and closing of the kitchen cupboard.

Thinking, you know, maybe it's my mom.

Sometimes she would come home early.

I turned right into the hallway to go to the bedroom, just take a nap after school. My mom, sometimes you come home early.
