When Michael Jordan committed, he went all in. There were no half measures, no compromises.

When Michael Jordan stepped onto the court, he played for nothing

short of victory. MJ was a driven, committed, and passionate athlete who was intolerant of

mediocrity. But he didn't just play that way. He lived that way as well. Just ask his most

trusted friend of 40-plus years, Fred Whitfield. Over the years, Whitfield served Jordan as his agent,

as a consultant, a business partner in the Jordan brand, and in the front office of the

Wizards when Michael owned the team. In Michael Jordan's book, Driven from Within, Whitfield

recounts an experience that he had when MJ visited his home in Greensboro, North Carolina.

After catching up, they decided to go out for dinner.

On the way out, Jordan says to Whitfield, man, it's kind of cold out there.

Can I borrow one of your jackets?

Sure, says Whitfield, go in the closet, grab anything that you want.

MJ ducks into the bedroom to grab a jacket while Whitfield waits out in the hall.

MJ steps into the closet and sees it filled with Puma and Nike gear.

Whitfield explained, I was really close to Ralph Samson.

Ralph was a 7-foot 4-inch phenom who played nine seasons in the NBA and was now an ex-player.

Ralph had a big Puma contract, Whitfield explains. When I would go to

Boston with Ralph, we'd go into the Puma warehouse and they'd say whatever you want, pick it out,

and we'll ship it to you. When I go to the Nike campus with Michael, they would say the same.
