Summary

How do you inspire change in others without pushing them away? Paul Martino never really enjoyed drinking. It was something he did to fit in. When he and Stacey Martino became intentional about their health, they decided to change their relationship with alcohol. During a difficult time in their marriage, Stacey tried pushing Paul to do things her way but when she shifted her focus to her own growth, Paul felt inspired to change on his terms. Now, 25 years later, they haven’t had a drink, by choice, because it aligns with their values. In this episode, Paul and Stacey join Annie to share tools to navigate different drinking habits as a couple and how to inspire change in others without pressure or judgment. In this episode, Annie, Paul, and Stacey will discuss: - Why social drinking never felt right for Paul - Prioritizing health and rethinking alcohol - How to navigate different drinking habits as a couple - Managing triggers and responses in relationships - Owning your growth without relying on others - Choosing patience over judgment - How to inspire change without being forceful - Building trust while respecting each other’s choices - Letting go of “if you loved me, you would” thinking - Addressing safety concerns with care - Facing challenges and growing through discomfort - And other topics… Related Episodes: EP 41: Relationships, Marriage & Alcohol with Stacey Martino https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-41-relationships-marriage-alcohol-with-stacey-martino/ EP 278: Reader Question – How Can Friends and Family Support Someone Who Is Changing Their Relationship With Alcohol? https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-278-reader-question-how-can-friends-and-family-support-someone-who-is-changing-their-relationship-with-alcohol  EP 364: Reader Question – Do I Have to Choose Between Being Alcohol-Free or My Relationship? https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-364-reader-question-do-i-have-to-choose-between-being-alcohol-free-or-my-relationship/  Resources Mentioned: Paul & Stacey’s Website: relationshipdevelopment.org  Paul & Stacey’s Book, The Missing Piece: A Proven Method to Single-Handedly Transform Your Relationship and Create Harmony in Your Home: https://www.amazon.com/Missing-Piece-Single-Handedly-Transform-Relationship/dp/1401993907  Ready to take the next step on your journey?  Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. So this is a super fun podcast because not only have we known each other for a long time, but you guys do

0:33.5

amazing work in the world about relationships and you haven't had a drink in like 25 years.

0:38.9

So we have so much to unpack. I can't wait to dig in. Let's start with the alcohol.

0:44.8

Tell me how you guys came to that decision. When I was younger, I was surrounded by a lot of my friends

0:50.0

were drinking all the time, and it was just socially acceptable and around me. But all the while,

0:55.0

like I never really got the bug for it. For me, it was a case where I would do it, but it was more or less

1:00.0

like that social conditioning and being part of the group. Every time I did it, I was still hesitant.

1:06.0

And then as I got a bit older, now into my early 20s and later 20s, there was a case where I just

1:12.8

didn't enjoy it.

1:13.6

So if we went out and my friends were still in social groups where the fun activity for the

1:18.4

weekend was going out to drink, I would take one beer and then milk that one beer all night

1:23.4

long so I could blend.

1:24.7

But it was always a case where I was a bit hesitant and it was that

1:27.6

social environment that pushed me to want to do that. But after a while, Stacey and I got

1:33.2

together and we both mutually made that decision where we're like, this isn't really what we want

1:37.7

is that life by default approach. And it was one of the things that we decided we didn't need

1:43.0

and we didn't want as part of our daily

1:44.5

routine or even for the social aspects of it as well too. Did you guys very intentionally
