W. Allen Canty Jr. was born November 30, 1933 in the city of Detroit.

We have quite a bit of insight into Al's childhood thanks to his eventual wife, Dr. Jan Canty.

She wrote in her book A Life Divided that his mother, Gladys, was unendingly polite and prim and proper.

His father, Al's senior, was articulate, decisive, and confident.

While also being complicated, introverted, and brooding, he habitually corrected people's grammar and preferred lecturing over listening.

Al's senior was a self-trained bachelor level forensic psychologist for the Detroit Police Department.

He let everyone call him Dr. Canty, even though he never attended graduate school and his doctorate was honorary.

Al's junior grew up in a house with no family photographs.
