I have such fond memories of the Northwood Shopping Center at 13-mile in Woodward Avenue

in Ryloke.

When I was very small, my grandfather and I would go to the Saunders Ice Cream Shop.

He'd get a hot fudge cream puff and I'd order a scoop of ice cream.

There was a dime store in the Shopping Center.

Cresky or Woolworth, I can't remember.

We would browse the store sometimes or have a meal at the lunch counter.

In 1978, my grandmother's brand new Ford Thunderbird was stolen from the parking lot at Northwood.

The theft was a big deal to a little kid like me.

And it was around that same time I learned about unions.

When I saw the employees of Cunningham's drugstore striking for better working conditions.

Northwood isn't there anymore, not really.

There is a shopping complex on the location, but it's owned by Beaumont Hospital.

And it's just not the same place that it used to be.

Not only does that spot have a lot of memories for me, but some bad things happened there.

Some very bad things.
