I'm Rachel Stewart.

Now the Ness of Broadcar in Orkney is well known for being one of the most significant Neolithic sites in the whole world.

Since excavation work began in 2004, archaeologists have made one incredible discovery after another.

Next year, we'll see the final digs at the site and the ancient settlement

will then be covered over to protect it from the elements. I spoke to two of the people who've

been instrumental in leading this incredible project, Anne Mitchell and Nick Card. And they started by telling me how it all began 20 years ago.

Well, the story really begins when the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site was designated back in 1999.

And from there, we initially did, started a large-scale geophysics program looking for anomalies

to put the known sites into kind of wider context. And what the geophysics showed was that these two

fields were just covered in anomalies. And from there we started off fairly small scale just

with a series of test bits. But as you'll see, our trenches have since got a bit bigger.
