Summary

The Path of Spiritual Surrender: Part 1 (2019-07-10) - Cultivating a surrendering presence allows us to release the identity of a small, separate self, and open to the truth and fullness of who we are. These two talks explore misunderstandings about surrender (such as the fear that we will become passive or condone injustice) and the practices that create the grounds for surrender, emotional healing, transformational activism and spiritual freedom.

"Don't turn away. Keep your gaze on the bandaged place. That's where the light enters you.” ~ Rumi

Namaste and welcome.

I start tonight with a very classic teaching story.

0:33.1

The way it begins is a man who falls from a precipice and he finds himself perilously hanging

0:40.8

from a limb and there's a tiger just kind of pacing above and jagged rocks below and

0:48.3

he calls out frantically help as anybody there and he hears a resounding yes and he goes,

0:56.6

God? Yes, booming. God, can you help me? Yes, you need to do only one thing, anything. Let go.

1:05.4

And he says, he's anybody else there?

1:12.5

So I've been sharing this particular teaching story for as long as I can remember because

1:19.8

it's the very last thing we want to do when we're feeling threatened is to, you know,

1:27.4

we're caught up in protecting and grasping and the last thing we want to do is let go of control

1:35.0

to let go. Ajahn Chah is a great Thai meditation teacher. One of the stories used known for

1:44.4

is he'd walk around the monastery when different monks were meditating and when he'd see somebody

1:51.0

who was struggling who seemed to be really suffering, he would say to them, oh, must be very attached.

2:00.1

Knowing, and this is what we're going to look into, that when we're suffering, we're holding on

2:08.2

really tight at that time to the sense something's wrong, something's wrong with me or defenses or

2:16.2

our judgments or in control mode in a deep way. And so the teaching, and this is an integral part

2:25.0

of any spiritual path, is that the freedom comes when we learn to loosen the grip, when we learn to

2:33.4

let go some. And from Ajahn Chah, these are his words, if you let go a little, you'll find a little

2:42.0

piece. If you let go a lot, you'll find a lot of peace. If you let go absolutely, you'll find

2:50.5

absolute peace and tranquility. So this talk and our next one, the Soviet two-part series,
