0:00.0 | So, Burdo, I watched the documentary about lying, and they presented a lot of research, psychological research, about lying, a lot of facts about lying, which seems like an oxymoron, and I thought I would talk with you about the documentary and about all the research I looked up, and we could discuss lying, what do you say, Burdo? |
0:18.5 | Let's do it. |
0:19.2 | This is the psychology and shadow podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Kirk Honda. I'm a therapist, and I'm also a professor. |
0:24.3 | My name is Umberto Casinha. I make a triangular ice cube. |
0:28.0 | So, I acquired the following facts. This isn't the documentary, but from the internet, very different websites, brand-in-gale.com, littlethings.com, and other places, tougher bluff, Burdo. Americans lie 11 times a week, tougher bluff. |
0:42.0 | 11 times a week. Um, well, if we are talking about all sorts of little white lies included, then I'm going to go tough. |
0:50.5 | Yeah, it is tough. What do you suppose they are measuring as an incident of a lie exactly? You know what I mean? |
0:57.7 | I mean, to be completely literal, it would be any time that they make a statement non-ironically that is factually not true, right? |
1:06.7 | But in practice, that's kind of odd, because there's so many relative things like, oh, did you part close? |
1:13.7 | Yeah, but you might disagree, but I'm not lying. I'm just kind of fudging the facts, but it's not a big deal. |
1:21.7 | Right, is lying, I'm obviously telling your spouse that you didn't cheat on them when you did cheat on them. That's clear. |
1:28.7 | But I'm guessing that's not the majority of these 11 times a week, is lying like when someone asks you, so did you tip them well? |
1:38.7 | And you're like, yeah, I tipped them pretty well, even though you kind of know, I only tip them. Is that what we're talking about? |
1:44.2 | I imagine that's the majority of these lies. It's like seemingly smaller and consequential lying, or lying on an exam, or your boss says, so did you show up on time today? |
1:57.2 | And you're like, yeah, even though you're at events late or something, or you tell your boss, oh, I'm sorry, I didn't turn that in. I was real sick last night, even though you went out with your friends instead. |
2:07.7 | You know, I'm guessing those are the honest. Yeah, I will go with that tougher king go with that tougher. |
2:13.7 | Oh, by the way, everyone out there in podcast land, burdo is actually in the studio with me right now. |
2:20.7 | We are podcasting in in person. This is crazy. We're so close we can touch fingers. We just touched fingers. We just touched one finger. |
2:27.7 | Reach out touch fingers. Burdo got his second vaccine a little bit ago. And so we are rare and ago, spitting in each other's faces like the old days. |
2:36.7 | Yeah, crazy. How do you feel? I on the one hand, as I said, when I walked in, part of it doesn't feel that long. I mean, other than your place got rearranged pretty significantly. |
2:45.7 | But I guarantee if you hadn't rearranged it, it would have felt to me like I was here a few weeks ago. But at the same time, it's like a year and a half. So it was crazy. |
2:55.7 | Yeah, a lot of elements are like that for me. You know, you and I were very careful during the pandemic. The whole time we're just so desperate for return to normal life. |
