Summary

What do you get if you smash two hydrogen nuclei together? Helium and lots of energy. That’s no joke – it's nuclear fusion! Nuclear fusion is the power source of the sun and the stars. Physicists and engineers here on earth are trying to build reactors than can harness fusion power to provide limitless clean energy. But it’s tricky... Rutherford and Fry are joined by Dr Melanie Windridge, plasma physicist and CEO of Fusion Energy Insights, who explains why the fourth state of matter – plasma – helps get fusion going, and why a Russian doughnut was a key breakthrough on the path to fusion power. Dr Sharon Ann Holgate, author of Nuclear Fusion: The Race to Build a Mini Sun on Earth, helps our sleuths distinguish the more familiar nuclear fission (famous for powerful bombs) from the cleaner and much less radioactive nuclear fusion. And plasma physicist (another one!) Dr Arthur Turrell describes the astonishing amount of investment and innovation going on to try and get fusion power working at a commercial scale. Contributors: Dr Melanie Windridge, Dr Sharon Ann Holgate, Dr Arthur Turrell Producer: Ilan Goodman

Welcome back, Curios. It is the last episode in the current run,

0:03.1

but we've just been informed that we will be back in January.

0:05.8

We haven't checked our schedules or diaries.

0:07.6

I am fairly certain that there are zero days left in mind

0:13.0

on Adam's diaries that align neatly enough to be able to record an episode.

0:16.9

But we'll find Christmas Day, Boxing Day,

0:19.7

these are the types of things that we can...

0:21.3

We say this to you as we are in on our bank holiday recording this view.

0:25.4

That is our level of dedication. Indeed it is.

0:28.1

So do send us your new questions,

0:30.0

because even though there is a new series apparently starting in January,

0:32.6

we have literally no idea what it's going to be on.

0:35.6

So send us your questions to CuriosCases at bbc.co.uk.

0:39.7

And our one for new producer, Ilam,

0:42.3

will go through them and pick out the very best,

0:45.9

which is exactly what he did for this episode coming up.

0:49.4

A big, high energy physics episode to finish off this series,

0:58.0

because we are talking about nuclear fusion today.

1:01.0

It's a power source that has been hyped and hyped.

1:03.6

Right, the stakes couldn't be higher.

1:05.2

If we can get nuclear fusion to work,

1:07.2

then we enter an era of clean, endless energy.
