was the eldest son of Alexander Hart, the owner of El Hart and Son Department Store, situated in San Jose, California.

Begun by his grandfather, an Alsatian immigrant who started the shop in 1866, the corner store was taken over by Alexander, after which it ascended to landmark status, and became to San Jose

what Macy's was to New York. By the year in 1933, the 22-year-old was the heir of one of the

city's best-known businesses, famed for its attentive customer service, and survivor of the

Great Depression. While the Hart family was considered incredibly prominent, Brooke himself,

who grew up working at his family store, and was now a junior vice president being groomed

to take over after his father's retirement, was also known for his kindness and was incredibly

well-liked in his community. On November 9, 1933, just before 6 p.m., Brooke Hart pulled his

brand-new Studebaker President Roadster, a graduation present, from the parking garage just behind

the department store, and drove his father, who did not drive, to a meeting of the Chamber of

Commerce at the local country club.
