Summary

There’s never been a culture with a lower pain threshold than ours. There’s never been a culture that gave us fewer resources for dealing with the brutal realities of life and death than ours. The writer of Hebrews wants his readers to understand how to become the kind of people who can cope with the brutal realities of life. To a great degree, the climax of his argument is here in Hebrews 12. We’re taught here 1) life is a race, 2) why to run the race, and 3) how to run the race. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on April 10, 2005. Series: Christ: Our Treasury (The Book of Hebrews). Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-13. 0:00.0	Welcome to Gospel and Life. This month on the podcast, Tim Keller is preaching through the book of Hebrews to answer this essential question. If God loves us so much, why is life so hard?
0:20.3	The scripture is taken from the book of Hebrews chapter 12, verses 1 through 13.
0:26.6	Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and let us run with perseverance the race
0:40.1	marked out for us let us fix our eyes on jesus the author and perfecter of our faith who for the joy
0:48.6	set before him endured the cross scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
0:57.3	Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
1:05.8	In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood, and you have forgotten
1:12.9	that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons. My son, do not make light of the Lord's
1:20.3	discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
1:26.9	and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.
1:31.9	Endure hardship as discipline. God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by
1:38.5	his father? If you are not disciplined and everyone undergoes discipline, then you are illegitimate children
1:45.8	and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected
1:53.6	them for it. How much more should we submit to the father of our spirits and live?
2:00.6	Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best,
2:04.3	but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness.
2:09.8	No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.
2:14.6	Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been
2:20.7	trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. Make level paths for your feet
2:28.5	so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed. This is the Word of God.
2:37.5	All right, Hebrews. We've said the book of Hebrews is written to people who are so beaten down
2:44.1	with difficulties, troubles, and suffering that they're ready to give up. And that the book of Hebrews, therefore, is intense public pastoral counseling.
